Last year Tyrann Mathieu was the undersized defensive back/return man who captivated America with his surprise run to finishing top five in  Heisman voting. After Today Tyrann will be lucky if he even steps on a college field this year.

“The Honey Badger” who had appeared on SportsCenter as recently as this week, was dismissed from LSU Friday morning. LSU Head Coach Les Miles said gave the company line and said that Mathieu was dismissed for violation of team and school rules. Numerous media outlets are reporting that Mathieu was dismissed after failing a drug test.

When that report surfaced it was tough to understand how such an important player could be let go because of failing A drug test, but if you remember last year Mathieu missed a game because of failing a drug test. And it appears Mathieu failed  a drug test prior to the other two.

Mathieu can either transfer to another school and sit out one year and then play his Senior year, or transfer to a Division two school and play immediately.

No matter which route “The Honey Badger” chooses, it will be a huge drop off from what he could have had at LSU. If he hadn’t failed the test, he was in a position at LSU in which he could win the Heisman and compete for a National Title. He won’t get the chance to do either of those this year. And all of a sudden a guy who could have put together one more great year at LSU and be a first-round pick, Mathieu looks more like a guy who who is an undersized defensive back, with a history of a drug problem. Mathieu, wherever he goes, needs to kill it for the next year or two, and stay clean, if he wants any chance at living his NFL Dream.
