Deadline Watch: Marco Scutaro

Journeyman, veteran second baseman Marco Scutaro could find himself wearing his sixth Major League uniform this season.

It is no secret. The Colorado Rockies are terrible. So terrible in fact, they could be shopping Scutaro, a player who they acquired back on January 21st of this year from the Boston Red Sox for Clayton Mortensen. Scutaro, along with Jeremy Guthrie, Jason Giambi, and Rafael Betancourt could all be shipped out in hopes to rebuild. The Rockies are currently 31-50 and in the cellar in the National League West. But Scutaro, like the other players named could help contenders right now.

Scutaro is in a contract year. He’s due to make $6MM this year and could be a cheap infield option to most contenders. Scutaro currently holds a line of .285/.337/.387 with 4 home runs and 24 RBI’s and possesses a 0.4 WAR. He would be an instant upgrade for a team like the Detroit Tigers who are in the hunt and desperately need an upgrade at 2B. Their incumbent, Ramon Santiago, is hitting at a bleak .228 with 2 homer’s. Numbers never lie, Scutaro is better.

I recently asked Ben Nicholson-Smith of mlbtraderumors.com, this question, and he agreed with me that  Scutaro to the Tigers makes sense.

The Rockies probably wouldn’t require a lot in return.

The Tigers are currently 40-42, 4.5 games behind the division leading White Sox and are in third place.

I expect the Tigers to be buyers at the deadline and Scutaro could be a target.
