There is an old sports cliche   that says that players don’t lose their starting  jobs due to injuries. Now Jack Harbaugh clearly taught his sons a lot about the game of football, but apparently Jack missed teaching this lesson to Jim.

Coming off a huge first start on Monday Night Football, Colin Kaepernick will start Saturday over Alex Smith, says SI’s Jim Trotter. Trotter also makes it clear in the tweet below, that 49ers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh was up front with Smith, and told him that he was not going to start because of Kaepernick’s play, not because of his own health.

It is important to remember Trotter says the source only guaranteed Kaepernick would start this week, after that the starting position is still up in the air.

Kaepernick replaced Smith in the first quarter of the Rams week 10 showdown with the Rams, a game that the 49ers would go on to tie. But Kaepernick caught the nations eye as he went 16/23, throwing for 243 yards, and two touchdown passes, as the 49ers walloped the Bears.

What makes this such a questionable decision is the fact that Alex Smith is coming off of the best season of his career in 2011. In 2012 Smith had been on pace to set career-high’s in touchdowns, Quarterback ranking, and completion percentage. Now Smith is left to ponder if his days in San Francisco may be numbered.

In the end, Harbaugh showed how quickly that he can pull the trigger this week with a rather abrupt switch to Colin Kaepernick, so a poor performance this Sunday, from Kaepernick, could put Smith back in position to be the starter for Week 13.
