After acquiring third-baseman Ryan Roberts from the Arizona Diamondbacks yesterday, someone had to be the odd-man out on the Rays roster. It turns out veteran slugger Hideki Matui was that guy, as the Rays designated him for assignment this morning. Matui had served mainly as a DH after being picked up early in the season by the Rays, but had struggled hitting  just .147 with 2 homeruns and 7 rbi’s, in the 95 at bats he received as a member of the Rays.

Hideki Matsui struggled in his limited time with the Rays, which may signal the end to a solid career.

Getting Roberts gives the Rays more versatility, as Roberts can play DH like Matsui, but more importantly he can play both corner infield positions. Third-base is the really important one because uncertainty remains about when Evan Longoria will come back, and Roberts gives the Rays a huge boost until Longoria comes back. Even when he does come back Roberts looks to be a great piece on the Rays bench, down the stretch.

Many speculate that Ryan Roberts could give the Rays their 2012 version of Dan Johnson
